Rosemary Owen receives the cheque from Linda Smith President of Network.
Network, the Algarve business women’s association chose Riding for the Disabled as it’s charity for 2006. At their February meeting, a cheque was presented to Rosemary Owen from Riding for the disabled. Over the course of the year 1,630 euros was raised mainly by raffles and a tombola at the Christmas fair.
In thanking the association, Rosemary explained, the money will be used to provide over 100 riding lessons for disabled children in the Algarve. “As well as being a valuable therapy- for many children it is also the highlight of their week. For disabled children with limited movement, they have the opportunity to sit up tall and see the world from a completely different aspect.” said Rosemary. One child expressed it poignantly. “When I am in my wheelchair people look down on me-when I am on a horse people look up to me”
Over 40 riders a week benefit from the therapy in the Algarve, which improves co-ordination, concentration and confidence. It is a labour intensive process, as each horse and rider need three helpers. Volunteers are always needed, if you would like to help please contact Beverley Gibbons at Pinetrees Riding Centre in Almancil. Tel 289 394369
