Following the success of the Network Christmas Fayre, the Network President Dr Janice Russell was delighted to be able to present a cheque for 2, 185 euros to Dra Margarida Cardoso, Director of Lar Bom Samaritano children’s home in Alvor. The cheque will go towards a much needed minibus so that children can be safely transported on outings of necessity or pleasure. Lar Bom Samaritano houses 36 children and young people in need through bereavement or breakdown in the home, and offers them protection, care, and educational and development opportunities. The professional workers appreciate all the help that is available and are always in need of resources which are not state provided.
This year, the sponsorship from Network has been welcomed and Dra Margarida said how touched she was at the fayre by the friendliness of the visitors that she met, and their willingness to give. Each year, Network, the association for business and professional women working in the Algarve, sponsors one charity of choice. They raise money through year long voluntary contributions at the Network meetings, but mainly through the tombola and the raffle at the popular Xmas Fayre, held on 1st December each year at Hotel Garbe. This year, the fayre was better subscribed than ever, and the cheque presented was the greatest charity donation to date.
Janice Russell said ‘What a lovely meeting this was, to be able to present money to such a dedicated professional as Margarida for such a worthwhile project. When I come to the home, I’m struck by the lively warm atmosphere and the obvious love that resides in this home alongside the well organised structure. Thank you so much to all concerned - those who bought tickets, standholders, the Hotel Garbe, our sponsors, and our Network co-ordinator and members who put so much into making the fayre a success. Our target donation was 2000 euros and we surpassed it. This motivates us to try for even more next year. It’s a privilege to give something back to the community in which we live and work.’
