Summary - July Joint Meeting

Venue: Algarve Golf Academy, Albufeira

Despite the roads changing after our directions had been circulated, we had a great turn out of members and new guests to the impressive venue of Daniel Silva’s Golf Academy. (www.hoteisreal.com).

Daniel Silva is a former European tour player and two time winner on tour. Recently voted Portugal’s best ever player by the Portuguese Golf Federation, he has been coaching full time since 2000. He opened the Algarve Golf Academy on 20th September 2008, as part of the Hoteis Real hotel group.

We were all thrilled with the function room that looked over the impressive golf course and were delighted to discover that Network member Lis Jensen’s company had been responsible for the creation of our beautiful surroundings. This reminded me that all our members know people or businesses that could benefit from belonging to Network and we need to pool knowledge more often. With this is mind, as we look towards a joint meeting at the end of the year, please have a think. Are you are already a member that has a business that could host a central meeting? Do you work with people or businesses that might be appropriate? Do contact the Vice President for your area if you are interested.

Our speaker, Greg Stebbe, brother to Marilyn (Sweet Marilyn), gave us an in depth reality check on the current economic picture we find ourselves in. The first part of his presentation outlined how this recession would hit deep and be worse than any of us had perhaps seen. Greg suggested that though it was a longer term issue than we realize, there still are some real differences one can make to keep afloat. He also reminded us that many businesses streamline to better efficiency when faced with a crisis, many start up, only some fail and that people still need products.

The second part dealt with the how to think innovatively to stay on track. Product - what is your product and is it the best it can be? He emphasized that all businesses would need to improve on. This may be harder for some than others, but look at Internet utilisation, signage on vehicles, lways being ready to hand over business cards and have your Martini speech ready when meeting new people, and also Networking.

He used Network as a great example to illustrate his point. Greg suggested also trying to find other businesses to liaise with co-operatively – a subject Network touched on in April. Greg reminded us that exchange of goods and products (Bartering) could be better utilized, e.g. exchanging marketing advice for printing.

There were hard facts to deal with on a monetary angle including flexible or part time staff hours, a general necessity to really look at all angles of your business and review if you are efficient. Talking to Banks and re-negotiating deals can be a great way to both cut expenditure and also free up capital, so communication is key. Good negotiating skills are a must. Greg reminded us that we all have leverage in some way so start by thinking that way and implement new things, this is no time to be scared! Keep moving forward!!

Relax with Pinetrees Riding Centre

Now the autumn is almost upon us Pinetrees Riding Centre has a relaxed feel to it after the summer rush and invites residents to take advantage of a less busy time to resume group lessons ... particularly beginners and lapsed riders who want to get back into the saddle.
.
And, for the more advanced riders, there are now three experienced schoolmasters to help you improve further and enjoy.
.
Many of you will know Bombita, and Quinto – who is now back in work after a long time off – but will not have met the newest member of our team SUAN. He is being groomed to be our new ´schoolmaster´. Suan is a 1m.60 / 16h.h. 10 year old gelding bred by Carlos Mira from Beja. He is a kind, gentle natured fellow and with a lovely repertoire of classical lateral movements; he can do flying changes and a Spanish walk. His canter is just amazingly comfortable.

This summer we introduced two new Half Day Ride Outs and both have proved a great success. Whether riding through the Ludo valley with its orange groves, watercress beds and old farmhouses, before stopping for lunch at the A Colina restaurant; or, across the Ria Formosa where the mud flats tracks give an excellent surface for cantering, especially when covered by a little salt water as the tide goes out, and there is also a wealth of plant life on the dunes including a rare plant only found in this unique corner of Europe.

The Ria Formosa also provided the perfect backdrop for the Full Moon rides ... an experience not to be missed!

A Portada Theatre Group presents a Double bill

To be staged by A Portada Theatre Group at Teatro Lethes in Faro and the Lagoa Auditorium, Tom Stoppard’s satire ‘The Real Inspector Hound’ and ‘Snakes and Ladders’, a one-woman show written and performed by Nicky Moran.

Already seen in various local restaurants – featured as part of a theatre dinner evening - Nicky’s portrait is of Margaret Draper, a down-and-out, recently rehabilitated by Social Services. Praise has been heaped upon the witty script and Nicky’s performance, which deservedly can now be seen on stage.

It is appropriate to wonder what theatre critics, Moon and Birdboot, might have made of ‘Snakes and Ladders’? They are the main characters in ‘The Real Inspector Hound,’ as played by Simon Tubb and Nigel Barber.

Reviewing a whodunit detective drama the two pompous critics use every jargon-ridden cliché to sum up their opinions. On stage six other members of the cast act out a stereotypical murder mystery parodying Agatha Christie’s long running play, ‘The Mousetrap.’

Exploring the comic potential of theatre within theatre, there are hilarious results when the critics cease to be members of the audience and become entangled in the on-stage action.
A Portada’s interpretation of the complex script runs with clockwork precision taking every opportunity to embellish the humour and amuse the audience.

Directed by Priscilla Morgan

Other members of the cast include Rob Darbyshire, Marcia Meeuwissen, Nicky Moran, Michael Reeve, Touchelle Smyth & Simon Tancott

Book your space at our Christmas Fair now

Countdown to Christmas

Where will you be on Dec 1st 2009?

At the Hotel Garbe for the annual NETWORK Spirit of Christmas Fair we hope.

Once again this spectacular event will be taking over the Hotel Garbe in Armação de Perâ on the Bank Holiday from 1100 till11700.

This year in an exciting new development the Algarve’s biggest and best Christmas Fair will be held in the main Por do Sol Restaurant, which is extremely spacious and light, has spectacular views of the beach and access to the terraces.

Make a note in your diary now to be there, either as a stallholder or visitor.

We are organising a fun packed day to raise funds for NETWORK, Bom Samaritano, which is once again our Charity of the Year, and, of course the stallholders who will be working hard to attract as much business as possible.

An exciting programme of events will be organised to entertain all visitors to the Fair.
As a NETWORK member we really would like you to help make this year’s event a fantastic success

BOOKINGS:
A great opportunity for you to sell in the run up to Christmas or just to promote your business to a huge and captive Algarve based audience.

Double stand - 80 euros ( 1.6m)

TOMBOLA
We’re delighted that Karen Carfrae has once again offered to organise the Tombola in air of the Charity of the Year. It’s not too early to start searching your cupboards for unloved, unwanted but interesting items for the Tombola – we need to keep this stall going all day to maximise the funds raised.
Would you be able to donate a prize / prizes / vouchers from your company? For example, if you have a stand at the Fair why not donate a few €5 vouchers or discount vouchers to be spent at your stall? This is a cost effective way to bring business to your stand and support our charity. Karen will be contacting you soon re drop off points for all your donations.

The first opportunity to bring items along will be to the meeting on Sept 30th at Alto Golf.

RAFFLE Linda Smith has very kindly agreed to organise this important fundraiser and she will be contacting you re prizes. For the raffle we will be looking for a small number of top quality, higher value prizes. Any ideas or offers? Let Linda know now.

OFFERS OF HELP for the day would be most welcome but only from members who do not have a stall – they’ll be busy enough! If you could add your name to the list for selling Raffle or Tombola tickets, even for a couple of hours, it would help spread the workload. Having a change of personnel definitely injects even more energy into the day to help the sales rise. All you need is a comfortable pair of shoes and bags of enthusiasm!

Please contact Karen 968 413 688 or Linda at casadouglas@mail.telepac.pt to put your name down as a helper or to donate prizes for the Tombola or Raffle -

For any other suggestions or queries about the Fair itself contact Verna on 282 449395 – answer-phone or email pvkinder@mail.telepac.pt
